Red Sox acquire Corey from Rangers

Boston sends Luis Mendoza in swap of right-handed pitchers.

BOSTON -- As Red Sox Nation gears up for a potential blockbuster deal leading up to Monday's 4 p.m. ET trade deadline, general manager Theo Epstein made a much quieter transaction on Sunday, acquiring right-handed reliever Bryan Corey from the Rangers for right-handed prospect Luis Mendoza.
Corey was designated for assignment on July 25 so that the Rangers could clear a roster spot for Adam Eaton.
After being recalled from Triple-A on June 9, Corey, 32, put up solid numbers. In 16 outings, he was 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA. Over 17 1/3 innings, Corey registered 13 strikeouts and allowed 15 hits.
"I got my first win [at Fenway] and got my first loss there. I'm excited," Corey said. "I'm going to miss it here. But they're excited to have me. I really wanted to stay in this [playoff race] atmosphere."
To make room for Corey on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox shifted Matt Clement to the 60-day disabled list. The club doesn't plan to activate Corey until Wednesday.
Corey was originally a position player before being converted by the Tigers in 1995. He has spent time with in the Minor Leagues with the Diamondbacks, A's, Padres, Dodgers and Cubs and pitched in Japan in 2004.
The Rangers signed Corey as a Minor League free agent on March 29.
The Red Sox have been inconsistent with their middle relief this season, so Corey will have a chance to help remedy that.
Mendoza went 1-5 with a 6.38 ERA in nine starts since being promoted to Double-A Portland in June.

Fisk "1975"

My favorite photo and one of the best all time moments in sports.
Fisk willed it fair and game 7 was on.

Boston RedSox "2004"

The World Series Champions. " 2004 " Boston RedSox.

This was the team that finally got it done in the most impossible way of all time. By coming back in the ALCS down 3-0 in the best of seven to win 4 straight from the NewYork Yankees and earn the right to move on to the World Series. It ended 4 generations of frustration and humility.
A steal by Dave Roberts and back to back game ending hits by David Ortiz and it was back to the Bronx for game 6 and the unprobable grand slam by Johnny Damon in game 7 that nailed it shut and in one deciding series the greatest comback in all of sports was complete and the curse was over. If it would of been any other team that the RedSox beat and not The Yankees I do not believe the feeling of satisfaction and closer would of been felt.
It was then on to St Louis and 4 games that felt anti-climatic but still the route was on and the boys were champions of the world. A major league record 8 straight play-off wins was established and the invincible Yankees no longer seemed so invincible.
The chants of "1918" from the Yankee faithful no longer rang true and Bucky "Fucken" Dent was just another player that got it done for his team and the whole he ripped in our hearts with that cheap ass home run with yaz looking up was just a memory faded into our past like every other game played.
"Our boys had done it, with 2 million people looking on we celebrated like Champions and cheered our hero's on".

Boston RedSox "1918"

This is probably the most infamous team that the Boston RedSox had ever fielded. For 8 1/2 decades every team that followed tried invanely to do what this team had done, Win The "World Series".

Big poppy helps kids hit

Baseball's most potent run producer remembers what it was like to be a kid trying to learn how to hit a baseball.
With the help of his hitting coach and his batting-practice pitcher, David Ortiz used his day off Thursday to teach 150 kids about the fine art of hitting a baseball and having fun hitting it hard.
"We all are going to teach you how to hit the ball, hit for power and how to keep the smile on your face," Ortiz told the group, while showing off his trademark ear-to-ear grin, adding later, "I love having fun with kids. I have three."
The students, ages 7-12, listened closely during the first Big Papi Power Hitting Clinic for Kids at the Extra Innings batting cages some 25 miles south of Boston.
A second clinic for ages 7-17 will be held Friday morning between 9 a.m. ET and noon, also at the West Bridgewater facility. Presented by Papa Gino's and D'Angelo Sandwich Shops and in association with Vitaminwater and Smartwater, Ortiz used the clinics to give instruction on the mechanics of hitting, including bat grip, stance, trigger, swing and follow-though.
"One thing I had to figure out myself was how to hit the ball at that age," said Ortiz, whose trademark crouch at home plate is being imitated by young hitters all over Red Sox Nation. "I was standing up too much."
Alex Wolfe, a 10-year-old boy who suffers from neuromuscular degeneration, happened to be one of the lucky ones to get a lesson from the big-league leader in home runs (34) and RBIs (95). Sandy Wolfe, the boy's mother, said her son had been looking forward to Thursday ever since finding out about it one day at Children's Hospital.
"We live out in Medway, Mass., and we found out about it through Children's Hospital, since he is a patient at Children's in the neurology unit," she said. "They know he's the biggest Red Sox fan ever and they asked if he were coming and we looked into it and as soon as we found out about it, we signed him right up.
"He was ecstatic, so excited. It's wonderful and a great opportunity. It's amazing that David Ortiz is doing this, considering he flew all night long. I think he's a hero to a lot of kids because he's not only an amazing baseball player and power hitter, but he gives so much back to the community."
Another big winner was the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, which received 10 tickets to each session as a donation to be used by its members.
Despite getting back in Boston from Oakland early Thursday morning, Ortiz used several hours of his day off to show future baseball stars how to hit.
"When I was that age, I did a lot of thinking about how can I hit a baseball. There's a lot of people who tell you how to do it, but I never had the opportunity to see a pro doing it," Ortiz said.
"We try to tell our child it's wonderful to be a celebrity and everybody knows you when you're walking down the street," Sandy Wolfe added. "But look at what he's doing today. He's giving up one of his very few days off and all of this is going to end up going to charity and benefiting these children and other children."
Assisting Ortiz were Red Sox hitting coach Ron "Papa Jack" Jackson and Ino Guerrero, a member of the Red Sox staff.
"The biggest thing is that these [kids] are getting a good, solid foundation," Jackson said. "In anything you do, you have to start from the bottom and work yourself up. I didn't get the opportunity when I was growing up to listen to someone like David. But we're not out here to babysit. We're out here to teach. We want to put [guidance] back into the game like someone helped us out along the way. That's what we're doing. Putting back into the community and helping out."
The staff of Extra Innings awarded Ortiz with a lifetime membership and offered their assistance down the road, should he ever decided to stop by and work out the kinks.
"I always need help with my swing," Ortiz said, again sporting his trademark smile.

M V P

Can Ortiz be robbed once again? with A-rod looking like he is having the worst year of his career at the halfway point can Ortiz finally be given the respect he deserves?
Ortiz has re-written the role of the designated hitter and along the way has given a new meaning to the word clutch.
In a recent question and answer session on Bostondirtdogs.com the redsox general manager was asked if the team could of won the world series in "04" without Ortiz? He responded by trying to deflect the obvious answer by saying that every player on that team was important.
Ortiz single handedly won the ALCS from the Yankees and beat the best closer in history on back to back nights to do it. "Big Poppy will finish with somewhere around 8 years of team service when he retires or moves on and then the real question will be does the RedSox organization retire his number? The team would have to bend or amend their own rules but if not for Ortiz and his "clutchness" the RedSox would be still 86 years and counting.....
Ortiz deserved the MVP in 05 for sure and a decent arguement could of been made for MVP in 04 if he were not handicapped by his position on the team. It is Most Valuable Player and Ortiz despite his position as DH has been every bit the MVP of the Boston RedSox and in the American League. The first DH in history will win the MVP this year and should be the MVP of the RedSox Nation for a long, long, long time to come...........

REGAN

This is Regan, Our beloved boxer. He is our protector and our unconditional friend. He is one of the best dogs we have ever had. He loves the children and is as gentle as a mother with her newborn baby with all the kids.

my "number one Red Head"

This is my life and happiness,my balance and the only woman ever to put up with me and never once complain, my passion and my true friend. My wife Kathryn. she is the reason that I have been able to have a life filled with happiness and the reason that I have been at peace with life.
"Kathy" is my greatest asset and she makes everything in my life better just simply by always being there with out any expectations and selflessly always wanting the best for me first.
She is the reason that I never gave up, I always knew she was out there.
My only hope in life is that my children marry someone like her.
I hope that someday before it is all said and done that I have given her back as much love, kindness and understanding as she has given to me.....
Our daughter Lucy is in the photo with her.
